Mega Food Parks to take centre stage soon

The flagship scheme of Mega Food Parks was launched to boost the food processing sector through creation of advanced infrastructure and favourable environment for investment

Boosting the Indian food and agri sector with the launch of mega food parks, the government is likely to receive further accolades in the coming days as more food parks are in the pipeline.

In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, minister of State for Food Processing Industries Dr Charan Das Mahant informed that 30 Mega Food Parks were approved by the government in three phases under the flagship scheme of Mega Food Parks announced in the Eleventh Five-Year Plan (2007-12). Of these, 15 mega food parks of first and second phases are at different stages of implementation, while the proposals received for the remaining 15 food parks of the third phase are under technical appraisal in the Ministry of Food Processing Industries.
The flagship scheme was launched to bolster the food processing sector through creation of advanced infrastructure and favourable environment for investment including attracting foreign direct investment (FDI) by various tax incentives. Incidentally, the government allows 100% FDI through automatic route in infrastructure development including Mega Food Parks.
According to Eshwara Venkat Kumar, proprietor of Kumar Food Products, a small-sized food products manufacturer in Vijayawada, “The Mega Food Parks will provide that to the food and agri sector which IT parks are providing to IT players.”
More about Mega Food Parks
The Mega Food Park projects operates in a hub and spoke model comprising of a Central Processing Centre (CPC), aided by Primary Processing Centres and farm proximate facilities like Collection Centres. Around 30-35 food processing units are likely to come up in the CPC, as the centre provides for need based core processing facilities such as modern storage, processing, packaging and safety standards. That apart, it also provides Basic Enabling Infrastructure including captive power plant and effluent treatment facilities, much to the benefit of domestic food processing units.
