Food Processing Press Release

Kharif food grain production pegged at 98.83 mt, rice at 71.65 mt

Rice production estimates revised upwards by 2 mt

December 16, 2009, New Delhi: Based upon reports on estimates of area, production and yield of major kharif crops received from State Agricultural Statistical Authorities (SASAs) and scrutiny of these estimates through field visits to state governments as well as feedback from other agencies, the 1st Advance Estimates about production of major kharif crops for 2009-10 were released on November 3, 2009.

However, subsequently in order to further firm up the estimates by taking into account the rainfall during August-September, 2009 and the latest crop conditions, the estimates received from state governments were reviewed through discussions including personal visits by the officials of Ministry of Agriculture (MoA). During the process of the above review, the Government of Uttar Pradesh has reported that the widespread rainfall in the state from August-September, 2009 significantly increased the area coverage under kharif rice and contributed to better growth of standing crop, thereby leading to considerable improvement in its productivity.

In view of the above, the MoA has revised the 1st Advance Estimates of rice production for kharif in 2009-10 from 69.45 million tonnes (mt) to 71.65 mt. Accordingly, the production estimates of cereals and food grains also stand revised at 94.41 mt and 98.83 mt, respectively.
