Need for modernising Food Industry: Shri Subodh Kant Sahai

Shri Sahai inaugurates National Conference on Meat and Poultry Processing Industries

November 04, 2009, New Delhi: Subodh Kant Sahai, minister of food processing industries, has underlined the need for modernised food industry to enhance the quality of meat and poultry products in the country. Speaking at the inaugural session of the National Conference on Meat and Poultry Processing Industry, the minister said that the government has launched a comprehensive scheme for modernisation of abattoirs across the country for this purpose. Expressing concern over only 2% contribution in meat production in the world market, he said that contamination and deterioration of meat should be avoidable. He said that 100% foreign direct investment (FDI) has been permitted in the sector to tap the opportunities available in the section.
Mr Sahai said that the Ministry of Food Processing Industries is also providing incentives to encourage R&D in food processing for product and process development and improved packaging.
Ashok Sinha, secretary of Ministry of Food Processing Industries, informed the delegates that there is an urgent need to frame a right strategy for the development of meat and poultry production in the country, which will certainly bring prosperity to millions of our rural citizens and create employment opportunities in rural India. Having achieved the Green Revolution, the White Revolution and the Blue Revolution, the Pink Revolution should not be far behind. There are no restrictions on exports of poultry and poultry products. The government also provides some transportation subsidies (Rs 3-15 per kg) for its exports. Mr Sinha further said that meat exports have been growing at close to 30% per annum in terms of quantity. Indian poultry industry has been growing at annual varying rates of 8-15% and this growth in the past few decades made India the fifth largest producer of eggs and ninth largest producer of poultry broilers. At present, the industry is estimated at over Rs 30,000 crore and is expected to grow over Rs 60,000 crore by 2010.
The 3-day conference will hold discussions on issues such as untapped potential and technology of value addition for meat food products.
